Duct Tape Repairs - Temporary or Permanent

Duct Tape was originally invented to hold together section of duct for heating and cooling.

Since it first came on the market, Duct Tape has been used for repairs of all kinds. Almost everyone has someone in his or her family that uses the tape for every repair needed.

The duct tape repairman is usually the butt of jokes, but the real question is; can the repairs he makes actually be permanent. The answer is – that depends.

Many repairs made with duct tape can be expected to last for a number of years. This is especially true if the repair is on metal, in a dry environment and not under heavy use. Like its original purpose, joining two piece of metal together with duct tape can keep the two pieces together for many years.

Other repairs are not so permanent. Duct tape on glass will eventually begin to peel back, especially if exposed to sunlight. Likewise, its use on plastics leaves much to be desired after a few months.

Duct tape on wood is a sure fire way to ruin the wood surface. The adhesive on the tape will destroy wood finishes and leave behind a gummy, almost impossible to remove residue on the remaining wood.

While many repairmen use duct tape as a substitute for electrical tape, this use can be unwise and unsafe. Duct Tape was never intended to be used around live, exposed, electrical lines.

Duct tape is a wonderful tool for a quick fix in an emergency when the proper supplies are not available. Any duct tape repairs, other than on heating and air ducts, should be replaced and the item repaired properly as soon as possible.

Yet, there are those who will continue to use duct tape for their entire repair needs. And, that’s okay. Some folk just like to tinker with things over and over again. But the old adage comes to mind: fix it right the first time and you won’t have to fix it again. That’s generally not true with duct tape repairs.
