Taped Travel Tote: Kids Can Make a Duct Tape Travel Toy Box

Easy instructions on how to make a duct tape travel toy box for your children.

Planning a cross country driving adventure with your children this summer? Your children will likely come up with a list of the necessary 500 toys they just can’t live without and absolutely must bring. Before you let your car become a rolling toy chest, help your kids each make a toy bag to hold all the toys they can bring. Let them choose the color, the size and the style, then let them fill it up.

First, you’ll need to make five sheets of duct tape – two the same size for front and back, two the same size for the sides and one for the bottom.

  • Lay duct tape, sticky side up, on your work surface, overlapping each strip a little
  • Turn the sticky side up sheet 90 degrees then cover with tape, sticky side down, overlapping a little
  • Trim the edges
  • Repeat until you have all five sheets

Second, you’ll attach handles to each of the larger duct tape sheets (the front and back pieces.)

  • On each the front and back pieces, tape a loop, about 8 inches from end to end, on both the inside and outside

Third, you’ll assemble your pieces.

  • Tape the front piece to one of the side pieces, taping both the inside and outside seams
  • Tape the second side piece to the front piece, also taping both inside and outside seams
  • Tape the two sides to the back piece, again taping both the inside and outside seams
  • Trim excess
  • Reinforce each seam by placing a few pieces of tape perpendicular to the seams on the inside of the bag
  • Trim the last duct tape sheet to the size of the bottom of the bag
  • Attach the bottom as you did the sides, reinforcing both the inside and outside seams

Finally, you’ll need to finish your bag.

  • Add a stripe of tape along the inside and outside of the top of the bag to create smooth edges
  • Decorate with stripes, squares, initials or other shapes cut from duct tape
