The Red Green Show and Duct Tape

If you’ve never watched the Red Green Show, you’ve been missing out on not just a great entertainment for yourself, you’ve been missing out on great comedy and learning the various ways to use duct tape in your everyday life, even though many are exaggerated.

Airing from 1991 until 2006 on PBS in the United States and on the CBC in Canada, the show was a combination of a sketch comedy and a sitcom as the actors always play their own character. Focusing on home-improvement, fishing, and other outdoor stuff, the main character is Red Green, played by Steve Smith. Basically, Red Green is a very lazy handyman who takes shortcuts with duct tape. It doesn’t matter what the project entails, he always uses duct tape and the show designates duct tape as the handyman’s secret weapon.

From using duct tape to fix cars or modifying an item into something hilarious, such as a dog wash, Red Green provides entertainment for all. In one episode, Red uses duct tape to attach a bar stool onto the agitator of a washer. What does this make? A fun ride for the kids! Imagination was rampant on the show and this imagination was what made the show popular with both the young and the old. Men, in particular enjoy the show for his famous lines, such as “If the women don’t find you handsome, they should at least find you handy.”

While the show first aired in 1991, it wasn’t until the year 2000 that Red Green became the “Ambassador of Scotch® Duct Tape" for 3M. In 2002, a movie came out in theaters across America, Duct Tape Forever, that was based on the Red Green Show. While the movie bombed, they occasionally play it on PBS during the pledge drives.

While the Red Green Show airs reruns on both PBS and the CBC, the show will be missed by many. If you can catch a rerun, don’t be surprised by what you learn about duct tape and the many uses it can have.
